Fuzhou - Nothing Is Easy

11th April 2010

It has been a long time between reports: I've been back to Melbourne to visit family and friends, enjoy driving my car and riding my motorbike while enjoying some summer weather; even managed to go the international Superbikes race at Philip Island in Feb (refer photo).

Sad to say my return to Fuzhou hasn't been what I had hoped for: my new, experienced Marketing teacher colleague took one look at the facilities and students and after 3 days left Fuzhou, and us, stranded! I was relying on him to take the lead and make my life easier; as it is now, we have a fill-in teacher leaving me to sort things out!

When I was teaching a Management module last semester I created 200+ ppt slides in order to teach the main points in the student book. The previous year's Management teacher, who has that same module this year, is now teaching from my slides and says "they are fantastic". Perhaps all my effort last semester will live on... maybe I should have put a copyright on them!

With this semester's Marketing module I am obliged to teach from 369 ppt slides provided by NMIT in Australia, but I find that I need to correct some that are wrong and enhance many that I believe are confusing to the students. So, it's back to the same time-consuming effort as the previous semester - it appears nothing is easy for me in teaching Business modules! Oh, how I long to return to teaching English!

Back in March, after only 2 days of teaching I came down with laryngitis, totally losing my voice, and had to take 4 days off - leaving me with weekend classes to catch up. One amusing moment came when one of my new students enquired why I wasn't at school: to which I replied "I am at home with laryngitis" - her reply was "... is Laryngitis an Australian friend..."!

On the positive side I had an ex-student visit me for a few days where we explored some shops and a few restaurants. Yesterday I treated 4 of my better students to an interesting "meng guo" lunch. And, on the May 1 long weekend another student is going to be my guide to visit Xiamen: apparently a beautiful city, just south of Fuzhou and very close to Taiwan.

Hope all has been, and continues to be, well with you... Renzo
